Movie Review: Hat's Off to "Five Minarets in New York"

Written and produced by Turkish singer/actor/writer/producer Mahsun Kirmizigul, Five Minarets in New York (New York'ta Bes Minare) was screened in Melbourne, Australia for the first time tonight.

I had heard mixed reviews about the movie since it's screening in Turkey on the 5th of November 2010... Some had said that it does not support the Muslim community... that it in fact it defames Muslims... I wasn't too sure whether or not to believe this... I was skeptical since Kirmizigul is not afraid of dealing with taboos in his movies.

The movie is generally in Turkish, but filmed between Istanbul, Turkey - New York, USA - Bitlis, Turkey, there are many sections where English is spoken... however, whenever the language spoken is Turkish... or even Kurdish, there are English subtitles.

Although I must note that there are issues in the movie which are only common to Turks, so do not worry if you watch the movie and are unable to make sense of some parts.

The production is of a very high standard, probably one of the best Turkish productions ever... The topic however... to me... seems to lack in some ways... This is only because the issues at hand are very deep and require more attention. However, I do understand the reason, because 116 minutes just wouldn't be enough to fit everything...

All in all, the movie gets a 9.5/10 from me. One of the very rare movies that have made me laugh while crying, and cry while laughing. Some very very striking scenes...

If you are a Turk or are familiar with Turkish politics and traditions, this is a must watch (no offence to anyone else).

I personally think that the lead actor Haluk Bilginer (Turkish actor) was perfect for the role... I just can't get over how beautiful he played the part. I knew him to be a great actor, but now... he is that much more... especially after playing a role that is very different to his personal life and views so so well......

Oh and the action scenes particularly in the beginning made me OMG for the entire scene. Must watch must watch must watch! :)))

Mwahhhh
