Company Name for a Hijab Store - edb

I need your suggestions.. Really! Seriously!

Some of you may know, others and new comers may not... I have been running a Turkish hijab and clothing shop for 2.5 years now (also sell via Facebook).

I first started off under the name edb Scarves & Designs. Initially I wanted edb Designs, but it was already taken by some tech/industrial company. So I couldn't get it registered. I wasn't too comfy with edb Scarves & Designs, because it's too long. Then I went for edb Collection, which is what I have been operating with for a year now. However, I'm still not happy.

The edb is from my middle name Edibe (Adeeba in Arabic). I really like the way the letters look together. That's why I always write it in small letters. :)

Now, I'm wondering if I should stick with edb Collection or go for something like edb Fashion, edb Clothing, edb Hijab, or edb Moda. Any other suggestions???

I am going to have my official online shopping website up soon inshaallah (finally! I'm changing web designers), so the name needs to be consistent. Oh, another question! I have many online shoppers and many Facebook followers. Online a certain fraction shop via Facebook. Just wondering if an official online shop for my products would be more of an incentive for you to shop from me? I understand some just feel insecure when shopping via Facebook, but some on the contrary prefer it because of the interaction. What do you think?

A Dinner and I "Monochromed" Again

So how have you been? Great inshaallah! Personally, I had a stinkin' day even though the weather was lovely, but alhamdulillah I had a great night. :))

...

There's no such word as "monochromed", I know, but it works, and you know what I mean... So why not use it? :)))

Anyhow... I attended a lovely dinner event organised by an Islamic organisation tonight. It was actually an important event, but unfortunately some of the guests who were invited (well, let's say the majority) did not attend!

For the past few years in Melbourne, the Victorian Police and Australian Federal Police have been organising iftars during Ramadhan to invite people from the Muslim community. This is a part of their effort to understand and serve the Muslim community better.

To show the appreciation of the community, Imams around Victoria (some even made the effort to come from Sydney, South Australia...), Muslim business owners, outstanding people in the community etc were invited along with the Australian Federal Police, Victorian Police and the MP. Unfortunately I was the only Turkish woman (very small number of women!!!) and there was only one Turkish man.

Most of the Turkish community that was invited did not attend. This is largely due to the lack of unity amongst Muslims from different backgrounds (namely Turks and Arabs) in our community. It was sad to see, but nonetheless, it was a very beautiful organisation... yes, it did need improvement, but still, it was a lovely evening... which my friend and I ended with some narghile (shisha). :)))

Sooooo I could only take the photos after arriving home around midnight. Therefore please excuse the creases in my skirt :)

This outfit was originally my Eid outfit... which I was unable to wear for the occasion :( But I finally made use of it and wore it to the dinner tonight, and I think it was perfect for the occasion. :))

I was going to go for an off-white scarf with black print, but I wanted to go overboard :) with my accessories, so I thought the print would be too busy and possibly be a sight for sore eyes lol So plain black saves the day once again :)

Day & Night - 1 Day 2 Looks

So I had work during the day and an engagement party in the evening. I had no idea what I would wear - for day or for night!

Mashaallah it was the most beautiful and warmest sunny day since last summer, so I wanted to stay away from all black. I recently dug out a skirt I had purchased 7 years ago! I wore it a lot when I first purchased it, but had to put it away once I started piling back on the weight I had lost in the previous year. So I haven't been wearing it for about 6 years. I thought it would be a good idea to team it with tan accessories and a neutral scarf. I wore a summer scarf which is called "yaz ipeği" (pronounced yaz e-peh-ghi, meaning summer silk). It's not really pure silk, it is actually voile satin but the main composition of the fabric is polyester. Yeah I know too much irrelevant detail, but deal with it! :))) It is mainly produced in masses in Turkey during the warmer seasons as it keeps cool and prevents sweating. It's also the lightest fabric ever; so light that it feels like you have nothing on.

Anyways, yeah so I think I ended up with something that reminds me of a safari look. :)

After getting back home from work I didn't really have too much time to get ready for the engagement. I was obviously going to be late, so I tried to keep it as simple as possible. I opted to go almost all black and I knew I wouldn't be the odd one out. Majority of the guests usually tend to go for black at such occasions. :)

I wore a plain black maxi dress and jazzed it up a little with a pretty abaya kind of overcoat which I had purchased online... again... 7 years ago... I could have gone for a plain pink scarf to match the embroidery and lining of the abaya, but I don't have a plain one in that colour and anyways I thought it would stick out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of my outfit. :) So once again I went for a plain black scarf. I added a little colour with nude shoes, nude clutch, and nude ring. Eh, it was ok... I wasn't too satisfied, but I guess it saved the night without too much fuss.

I apologise for the photo quality as I took the photos after getting home and the room was a little dark.

My Favourite Accesasory: Pamuk

I had mentioned Pamuk here. She is now at home, where she should be... And she wont leave my side. By the way I think she's pregnant. We shall see in a few weeks.

The photos and outfit were meant to be about the skirt... It's different and so comfy... But yes, these photos rather seem to be all about her :) She makes a lovely accessory does she not? Well, not accessory, but you know what I mean. Yeah? I love her so much but she can be a real biatch sometimes. :)

Anyways, I wore the good old denim jacket once again. I haven't yet found the exact blazer jacket I'm looking for. And so here are today's photos...

Wardrobe Staples

The past two weeks have been very unorganised and very tiring for me. Moving, settling in (still not 100%!), looking to buy a car and still not know what we are looking for? Thankfully (NOT) my hubby changes his mind a couple of times a day. By the time I agree with his idea, he has moved onto another idea and is totally against the first idea which takes me a day or so to accept... This means that we never end up seeing eye-to-eye on anything. LOL I'm not exaggerating, seriously! :))

So, I have had my sister look after my shop and haven't had the time to take photos. Today I was at home, did no go out to look for a car, did not do much settling in our newly rented home. I had some little errands, did them and took the time to rest a little. Anyhow, I needed to go out somewhere so I thought I will put together a little outfit. I ended up using wardrobe staple items for the main part of my outfit. It didn't take too long to put together, because you can't really go with these staple items as long as the cut/fit is good. I am not too happy with the cut/fit of my top and jacket. They look too messy and I shall try to utilise them differently next time.

After seeing these photos I noticed that the top is too short for ME to wear with jeans/pants. However, I was rushed out of home without being able to see in a full-length mirror. And yeah the jacket looks sloppy and messy. So when I say "staple items" I actually mean a black jacket/blazer, pair of jeans, and a white top. :)

A closer look at my scarf/hijab. I really like this, but I think I am getting over the colour. It is a nice soft blue colour, but I dunno I think I just got too used to seeing it. :)

When Comfort is Priority...

...I prefer to go for long tops with a pair of jeans. I actually prefer trackies, but since I was going to be at the shop, I thought it would be a little more appropriate than trackies :)

The weekend was a full on drainer due to working at the festival. I had 2 jobs; manning my own stall with the help of my amazing abs (sis), and helping out my landlord with his flight centre stall. It's not actually the work that drains all the energy, it's the packing-unpacking to/at the festival grounds and packing-unpacking from the festival grounds and at the shop. It's taken me Monday and Tuesday to unpack and set up back at the shop and I still have some more things to do to say it's all done. To top it off, I still haven't recovered... the flu virus that I acquired during the festa isn't making it any easier.

I guess I don't have to tell you I couldn't take any photos at the festival. :( I had the cam with me, but had no time. :( The only photo from the festival is a family portrait (of the hubster and I) taken by a couple ladies from the immigration museum. I will post the photo up once I receive it in a few weeks.

Sooooo I thought I should take photos today even though I wasn't happy with the scarf I matched to my outfit. It should have been a plain scarf or one with a more sporty print. Oh well, it was the best I could do with 15 minutes to dress as I woke up late.... it was the only ready ironed scarf... had no option. :)

You can actually tie the front of this top... I've actually been wearing it tied until now. Just before taking the photos I thought it looks good untied too, so I let it loose :) Oh and if anyone is interested, I have a couple sizes left in this top in this colour and only one left in a gorgeous purple! As the sun shines down on me...

The early morning sun which has lately been peeping out from behind the clouds boasts with the great news that spring is just around the corner. Wednesday the 1st of September will be day 1 of spring here in the land down under. I'm sure many Aussies like myself have been enjoying the slightly warmer weather with brighter sunny days the past few days...

Anyway, the connection? Well, I feel like putting in more effort into my outfits on sunny days. No idea why (might have SAD*? lol), but it just gets me in the mood... I don't have too many bright coloured clothing, so even though I want to experiment a little, I am unable to, because 95% of my wardrobe is black! Grrrr

So I was out shopping this weekend, and I made an effort to go for some different colours. Now, I did invest in a black jacket for Eid and am sooooooo in love with it, but I went for other items that were lighter/different colours. Even though I think I spent a little over my budget at a time when I shouldn't indulge so much in shopping (just got back from overseas!), I am very very veeerrryyy pleased with the things I've been purchasing of late.

You say "whatever!", okay, so I get the point. :) Today's outfit consists of some items that I have worn previously in past posts, but I have one new item. So here goes... :)

Get Ready... Get Set... Get Nautical!

While in Turkey this year... I absolutely loved seeing almost everybody clad in 2010's favourite spring/summer colours; navy, red, white.

I've always thought this colour combination is very classy, and have always had something in these colours to wear especially during the warmer seasons. So as the warmer weather approaches us in the land down under (even though I'm sitting by the heater at the moment LOL), I welcome the nautical colour theme with love... Pffft BIG DEAL! I know, but I just felt like adding the thing about love, it sounds good? heheh

Aaaaanywaaaay... Let's get down to business, yeah? :)

Okay, who has an iPhone? Oops, wrong question; Who DOESN'T have an iPhone? Well I love mine, and to me, the covers I use are just as important as any other accessory! I don't have like loads of covers, but I plan to have more. Trust me, I only have 4. This is a cheapo one, a bargain at $3 Aussie buckeroonies... And to top it off, it was a gift from my one and only abowski*. So how many covers do you have? Abowski had another one, the same but in black... I chose this one for this cardi LOL I thought, 'go for something other than black for once woman!' Surprise surprise! I actually listened to me :))

Ah, and the shoes... I know they aren't the prettiest pair, but they are by far the comfiest! I have practically worn them out during the past 3 months as I can make them work for any occasion. Also, perfect height thanks to the short wedge heel!

By now, followers of this blog must have noticed my belts. I'm almost always wearing a belt. And NO, they don't make us look fatter... Maybe fatsier (it's not a typo!.. it just means 'yeah I may have some extra meat (i.e. fat) but I can be pretty' LOL I just made it up.. use is at your own discretion)!

Honestly, if used properly, it can enhance any plus sized woman's look... Some need to wear it at the empire waist (just below the breasts), some at the tummy, and some at the hips... depends on your body shape and what you are wearing... I very rarely wear it over a jacket or cardi, etc... I wear it under... so it gives a more slimming look rather than placing emphasis on the curvier side of things... if you kow what I mean :))

The biggest problem is being able to find some nice belts for us 'curvier' women. City Chic has some really nice ones, but prices usually start from $39.99 AUD... and they are almost always black! Autograph sometimes has some really hot ones, but not all the time! Once again, they are quite pricey... usually start from $49.99 AUD. Also, don't forget to check out K-mart for the cheaper ones.. they are not creative ones, nonetheless you can get standard-good looking ones for as low as $12-$15 AUD.

IMHO, belts should be a staple for any plus sized woman's wardrobe, especially if you wear cardis, jackets, coats, etc on top of your clothing... I like to leave the front part open as I think it gives a different effect :)

I would actually love a red belt to go with this outfit.. or just want one anyway! I'm especially looking for the thin ones, but will take any if I find it. Anyone know where I find one in the plus size range?

* "Abowski" is what I call m sister. The Turkish for "older sister" is "abla" (pronounced aab-lah). In some Turkish villages they say "aba". It's a quite popular way of saying "abla" in the Aegian area of Turkey which is where I come from. So "aba" was changed to "abo" with a touch of ... ummm Russian? LOL and when I put them both together, it sort of becomes an English word that doesn't exist :)))) So yeah, when I saw "abo" or "abs" or "abowski", I'm referring to my sis. :) FYI

Too Cold To Get Dressed!

I have been totally freezing my toosh off these last couple of days so I just can't be bothered getting dressed up. I know this is a bad thing, because any effort I make in my outfit reflects on my mood and how I feel about myself during that day. Also, I believe customers like seeing presentable 'sales assistants'. :) ..or do they? hmm... :)

Anyhow, it was just one of those days where I just piled on anything that was ready and convenient...

Okay, I know I look like a doofus, but I was only trying to show my shoes, but I failed despite all my efforts, so boo hoo! :)

What I Wore.. Yesterday :)

I was actually planning to wear something more spring/summer worthy today, but I thought it would be another cold, wet, and gloomy day just like yesterday... However, I was proven wrong with the sun shining through partial clouds.

Sure sounds like the weather forecast/summary :) but anyhow... I wore something really boring and didn't take any photos, so I have yesterday's 'my style' for you. :) It is not 100% hijab appropriate due to the fitted mini-dress, so I prefer to wear something like this only at the shop or if I'm going to a friend's home. I don't feel too comfy when out and about dressed like this... but that's just me!

The design on this scarf is actually a little different to the ones I usually wear, but I absolutely love the colours, and I have a few outfits which go very well with the colours. I love most Armine scarves as they generally have themes to them. A war is featured on this one, and it also pictures an old map from the Ottoman era.

You can't see my puppies in the full photo, so I thought I would give you a nice shot. I just purchased them from Novo last week, and am loving them! I've noticed that every pair of shoe I've been buying of late has been the wedge type.. but that's only because I have spurs on my heels which cause extreme pain and they're the most comfiest style of all. Oh and the colour.... I've been preferring the nudes to black since the start of this year. If you haven't tried nudes under any/every colour yet, I strongly recommend it! It seriously adds a different kind of class to any outfit.

Trash or Treasure ?

After 6 warm and sunny weeks in Turkey, I am back to cold and dreary Australia... but not really complaining as I have missed home muchly!

Today I have something different??? for you from Turkey. It's a hat/cap designed for hijabis.

I had first seen these on the videos from the Islamic Fashion Fair in Istanbul this year. According to Zehra Kamacioglu, the owner of Zehrace, they were just launched this year. We have discussed and with the company agreed to be their Australia stockist but I would like your opinion. I loved them when I first saw them, but now after I tried it on, I don't think it looks good on me. LOL I still think they look very hip and cool.

Anyways... I am sure many will have opinions as to whether it is hijab-appropriate or not, but I think it looks 'Muslim' enough? So, check out my very bad iphone photo below (sorry about the bad quality, I still need to find my cam and get it out of storage) and let me know if this number is one to trash or treasure?

Hijab of the Week

"Week" I say, but it's been over a month since my first and last (LOL) "Hijab of the Week" post. Sowwy beautifuls, but I am back on the ball again inshaallah! :)

Here is this weeks hijab...

This is a long/rectangle shawl scarf by one of Turkey's well-known brands. It is 100% pure silk and feels just amazing. I don't normally wear these shawl scarves except on rare occasions where I just cannot resist the beauty of 'that' certain scarf. I don't think it really suits me, but what I love about this scarf is the cinnamon border that frames it.

I'm going!

Just a few days ago I was on the phone with a friend. I haven't seen her almost 2 months now, but we talk on the phone or text each other whenever we can. The last time I spoke to, she asked, "are you still at the same place/house?"

She knows me so well after 10-11 years of friendship that she knows it is very ordinary for her that I may have changed homes (moved) or countries since the last time we spoke.

It is true; you can expect me to decide on something and act upon that decision right away. I am actually quite stable, I mean I like standing on solid ground, but at the same time I am very spontaneaous. Well, it seems that most members of my family and friends are quite used to this. I decided to go to Turkey this week (I'm flying in 24 hours). I discussed it on Wednesday, decided on Thursday, purchased ticket on Friday, told mum and some friends on Friday night, updated my Facebook status on Sunday, and flying Monday after midnight (it's actually Tuesday morning since it's after midnight).

I will only be away for 2 weeks. I have some business and need some time out. So I'm hoping that it's going to be an exciting couple of weeks inshaallah.

So please make dua and wish all the best. I hope to be back with some news too. :))

Just incase you may ask like some others have; the hairspray was used for the hair on the sides. They tend to slip out, so I use some hair styling products such as hair gel/spray to help keep them in!

I don't really watch television. Not because I don't like it, but because I don't really have the time to sit in front of the TV to watch what I like whenever the producers feel like putting on the shows I like.

I don't really have set working hours, so my life needs to be as flexible as I. So that includes my TV programs too!!! Which is why I usually watch whatever I want online at the times that suit me. I love it, because I can also choose what I don't watch.

Anyhow, back to the point. The last time I opened the TV was last week, and the only thing I noticed was a commercial by Witchery. For those of you who may not know, Witchery sells some hot good quality clothes and accessories. The prices aren't so economical, but I guess the products give you enough wear well worth your money.

The commercial probably wouldn't have attracted my attention if it was only a Witchery add, but they were contributing to something... Something important...

Cancer is a serious threat to our lives. The death part is something else, but while the person is still alive and suffering, it seriously affects the quality of life and the ones that are close to you. I have not had someone very close to me die from cancer, but I have heard of many whose loved ones have. I have also seen a lady who was a friend of my mother in law's die from breast cancer. It was so tragic... She wasn't conscious, but doctors said she can feel immense pain. I could see the pain her family was suffering... So any contribution that can be made is important, especially since ovarian cancer has no early detection. I appreciate what companies like Witchery are doing to help save lives.

Anyhow... If you need a white shirt which is an essential, Witchery does have some really nice ones with a price tag to go with it -but if you can afford it, why not buy one? I was actually surprised when I had a looksie at their collection. They have some really nice ones. I suggest you check them out too. Go on, click click.

I love this one. It's longer than a regular shirt and it's also worn loose rather than fitted. I just wish they had something bigger than a 14! Grrr...

I know I said I love the previous one, but isn't this one just gorgeous too? I love it! It's smokin' HOT!!!

Well this one is just elegant. It's nice and long so it can be worn with a pair of nice pants. NICE pants, the dressy ones, NOT casual pants!!!

Sarar Scarves - 2009-2010 Autumn/Winter Collection

Finally Sarar has updated it's silk scarf collection online. I've been waiting to see what they have in store for us hijabis this season...

Sarar's scarf range is actually quite new. Well, if I say new, I mean a few years... The brand is actually a very old and well-known top designer brand in Turkey. They have a deep-rooted history in the fashion (clothing) industry, but they do not cater for the muslim community like the other brands that sell scarves.

As you will see below, Sarar's scarves are worn by non-hijabis as an accessory... I had mentioned in past blogs that I am not really fond of scarf companies using non-hijabi models to showcase almost their entire scarf range, but in this case it is different... As I said, their targeted customers aren't entirely hijabis... Sarar has been catering generally for the rich and elite society, and the scarves are a part of this also. However, even though their scarves are 100% silk, they're cheaper compared to other brands - they sell at approximately $50-$55 AUD, while the others sell between $80-$300. Oh and the quality of their silk is excellent. In addition to this, they have some very nice designs. I actually liked the previous season's range more, and I think I liked that model more too :) but this season aint so bad either.

Lovely colour combo... Always love pink/grey and purple/grey.. also I had heard that leopard designs designs are coming back... Sarar has these designs on a few of its recent collection. We see some of the mentioned trend on this scarf... I like the fact that they've played with the designer "design" and made it their "own" :)

Gorgeous colour, plus the scarf is on her head (even if some hair is showing)... that's a bonus! lol

Scarves with maps on it are increasingly popular in Turkey... I'm liking them too...

I don't particularly like this scarf... not really my style, but I've put it here only because I LOVE GREEN! :)

I like brown... I also like the combination of colours used on here...

My favourite... I love vibrant colours on black which is why I usually wear a black outfit with a colourful hijab... I will definitely be getting one for myself inshaallah! Had I mentioned that this is my favourite? :)
